Presstype Collage

Below is the framework for my press type collage. The quote I’ve chosen is an African Proverb:  “When You Pray Move Your Feet.” I’m not a religious person (despite or because of the fact that I was raised Catholic), but I do believe in spirituality and that we all “pray” in one form or another when faced with challenges in life. All the same, this quote resonates with me because we are all capable of guiding of our destinies and cannot simply let life just happen, especially if we want to see change.

My initial idea is to show the “move your feet” part of the quote as footsteps. I’m not sure whether to treat the “when you pray” bit as an altar or in some other contemplative way…some thumbnail sketches will probably be good for this.

Here’s the next draft. I turned the canvas vertical to reinforce the message in a positive, upward direction. I also added a gradient to create a mood that goes from grey or neutral to a much lighter, color to imply lifting of aspirations. Finally I added with footprints in the sand turned to ink splots to echo the letters, which are arranged in a pattern that mimics footsteps themselves.
