THE SWISS STYLE AT WORK.
The birthday party poster designed for Kandinsky demonstrates the typical elements of the International Typographic, or “Swiss” Style. Strong use is made of the grid, but a nod to asymmetry is shown the viewer by the diagonal tilt of the entire design. In the top left, Kandinsky’s portrait is a formal pose in a black and white photograph, typical for the style. The use of color is spare yet bold, restricted to black, red and a warm neutral background. Bold lettering is intermixed with smaller sized fonts, yet all sizes are held together with implied grid structure and in the area of the event information, a literal grid sectioning off detail, yet still important, information. This is a quintessential design celebrating the birthday of an iconic Swiss Style designer.
